Recommended Websites Engine Oil Color Facts Many drivers assume that engine oil is commonly black in color, but this belief is absolutely false! Oil is not supposed to be black. In fact, the best quality of oil should be translucent and amber in color when you check it with your car’s oil dipstick. If your oil looks too thin or thick, with granular residues floating on top, or black or near it, then your engine needs an oil change. If you change the oil but the color remains unclear, you need an expert to have your engine checked for possible flaws. Sometimes, oil corruption is caused by defective engine system so take note of that. Engine oil color can actually give hints to the condition of your engine. The clearer the oil, the better! Changes in the color of engine oil indicate that something in the engine component have been damaged. Not only that, engine oil color also depends whether the engine is switch on or not. When the engine has not started yet, for example, the oil color is yellow or clear and transparent. A brownish yellow color, on the other hand, specifies that the engine has been used to run. Engine oil is usually black when the car has gone around 3.000 to 4.000 km, and it needs to be replaced when it reaches that interval. When oil becomes dirty black, you need to change it right away for it indicates that the engine oil was mixed with oil sludge and metal component as result of engine component friction. Automotive
